SafariSister has two biological sisters besides all my sista's on Etsy, friends and family. Both are talented, creative and technical in the work and interests they pursue -- one a eco product developer and the other a chef that specializes in deserts. I hope one day they too will be on Etsy.

Anyhow, sista "K" emailed me a description of a dream she had: She is just waking up in her bed and surprised that Michelle Obama is laying there next to her propped up on her elbow and says "You should do what you love to do".

What great dream!!!

Speaking of dreams. I came to Mexico City 2 years back to be with my husband who is a Mexican national. Recently we have separated but one of the other reasons I left the San Francisco Bay Area, a 6 figure job at Sony PlayStation, a very nice home and pretty good life was i wanted a new challenge. Over the years I had traveled to Mexico to go scuba diving and explore the arts and culture here in Mexico. A lifestyle dream emerged in which i visualized a lifestyle where i cold utilize the skills and my creative interests accumulated over 20 years to build a eco hycienda somewhere near good diving. No more commuting, no more 12 hours days in an office with no windows, a life of art and technology that would integrate my life and not separate my life into neat and boring boxes. Well it hasn't been easy but I am deep in the work belly of creating that vision.

There is alot of change going on in the world now and I'm feeling like I am very much in sync with that, i'm optimistic that if we can dream it we can experience in in real life. For me my dream is a simpler, richer more spiritual life.

Forging on, no pun intended, my master plan is to continue on with safarisister.etsy.com and jackypowell.etsy.com as a parttime love interest and switch my full time gears into another dream i've dreamt over the years: continuing on with mixing art & technology i'm starting a new business in which I'm creating engaging and useful interactive experiences (applications, games, content) for mobile devices. Being a girl and having been a girl in technology for over 20 years as well as knowing other women in technology I will be creating for and targeting my little sistas...girls, teenagers & women like you and me. Having a pretty good playing card to serve up, my last corporate gig was working as a senior artist for Sony PlayStation in which I was the sole US designer that created the XMB (Cross Media Bar) navigation system on PlayStation 3, PSP and all Sony devices that utilize a interactive display system. I sure miss the day to day interaction with all those quirky and talented engineers and artists at Sony, but facebook allows us to keep in touch.

Here's a sample of some of the work i've did over the years in the entertainment, technology, web, broadcast and game industries:

I'm revamping the ole resume and portfolio on www.jackypowell.com and am available for any mobile content or design needs you may have (shameless plug, drop me a line if you or others need art or design) concentrating on UI design and interactive user experiences in the mobile device - girls, teenage and woman's markets. It many ways it is very similar to jewelry making -- user experience, size & scale, design approach, targeting a particular market, and at the end of the day doing what you love to do.

I've always called myself a low-tech high-tech girl, utilizing technologies from 4000 years ago (in metallurgy and metal smithing) to current computer based technologies and methodologies (games, web, mobile, Interactive TV +more).

Perhaps in the future I will be able to merge my interests further...jewelry and technology mmmhhh....mobile phone technology and jewelry!

One of the many things on my to-do-list this year was build content that my domain names can point to. As sales shrink temporarily with the eco-crunch it's actually been a blessing in that it's given me the time to work on marketing tasks, trouble shooting production issues & updating my portfolio.

Not sure if many of you know. I have a dual professional past & present -- metal and digital arts. I lived and worked in the San Francisco Bay Area for 19 years. The last 7 years, before relocating to Mexico City with my husband and 3 dogs :o, i worked as a Senior Artist for Sony Computer Entertainment America. I was fortunate to have had the opportunity to be the sole US designer on the XMB (Cross Media Bar) Navigation system for the PlayStation 3. The management, engineers and other artists were incredible..that rare mix of creative and tech!!! So I wanted to dedicate http://www.jackypowell.com to being my portal for my various professional interest and experiences as an artist-designer-animator for the search engines and to be quite honest...as a independent artist one needs to multi-task and multi-market in order to make a living. I would'nt trade if for anything though. Bless your heart corporate America!!!

I've met so many artist on etsy.com, predominantly women by the way, that share a similar experience. Working in tech for many years, but having always squeezed in those creative projects on the side and then at some point having the opportunity to swap the proportions. Able to shift gears to have the larger portion of ones day dedicated to personal creative pursuits or raising a family with the tech work taking the back seat or completely falling away. Not bad work if you can get it :>

While I am not exactly a fashionista I do like to follow market trends in and around when i am designing and developing a jewelry collection to give myself the best chances of getting the word out and selling what i create so that i can create more :>

NEW $2.66 Recycled Metal Handforged SafariSister Earwires

You may have started to see jewelry makers utilize the term "recycled metal". It may be a bit of a misnomer as many seasoned jewelry artist take their scrap metals (the snips, bits and filings) and turn it over to their metal source for cash back on a new metal order. It is very common for metal refiners to utilize scrap metal. It's been part of the industry since their has been an industry. Kind of like utilizing the latest recycling term "upscaled" :>

I"ve actually been playing with recycling my metal scraps in my workshop with my own two hands. My process is not very "refined" yet but I was able to make some yardage of wire from a met pot of sterling silver, fine silver, copper and nickel. The material is strong and springy, after pulling and pulling..did i say pulling...through my draw plate (OMG note to self: leave recycling metals to metal refiners :o)I was able to fashion and hammer the wire into this particular design. I tryed some smaller tighter shapes but this larger version looks the best.

Mmh...no that's not a Eckhart Tolle quote (and ya know i'm thinkin it is)...it's actually a marketing stradegy to make sure that your brand is carried from one collection to the next. Evidence of one's DNA from jewel to jewel.
I really suck at marketing so i am burnin the midnight oil to figure this business out, wish me luck!

oooh folks having endured Michigan winters for my first 20 something years, an intermission of 18 years in the Bay Area of California...i cannot begin to tell you how WONDERFUL the weather is here in Mexico.

Roses, nasturiums, gernaiums and others in my garden bloom continuously.

...right out of my potted plants garden this morning which I grow on my rooftop here in Napoles, Mexico D.F. -- the colors are incredible.

Pitbull and Photo Promanade

Most every morning I walk, shuffle and run with my pitbull Solovino in and through the streets of Napoles here in the largest city in the world - Mexico City. A curious sight -- the red faced gringa and a pitbull carrying 12 pounds in his doggie back pack.

Recently i started carrying my dig camera and established a theme week. Last week was Metal. Here's a few photos (of over 500 I took) in and around the theme of "Metal" while walking the streets of Mexico.

I've been exploring metal in my art work since 1995 so you can understand why i'm drawn to rusty things :>

When i first encountered Spoonfulofchocolate's Shop my mouth was watering for, but of course chocolate, but to my calorie free delight I stumbled upon this unique artists line of book "bags"...purses...in espanol we say "bolsa".

This multi-talented and multi-medium artist is originally from Czechoslovakia and has a very interesting story to tell as to how she began on Etsy (read her story in her profile). Her purses are created from recycled book covers and adding beautiful fabrics and hardware she yields these very functional yet beautiful works of art and craft.

Wow, well i have encountered many life changing ideas since i relocated from California to Mexico City. A 7 month hiatus away from corporate america to rejuvenate my creative muscles i've traveled quite a bit throughout Mexico, have learned a bit of Spanish and probably lost some English along the way. Have started a line of Jewelry findings as a means to keep my hands busy from picking up a cigarillo, have completed two semesters at animationmentor.com and frankly have learned more about animation in 5 months then i have in 20 years and all that art education.

Recently however, I was surfing and came across a very interesting group of creative technology visionaries (i hope there're reading this) my mind is a "mash" with learning about these really interesting ideas and stradegies in and around the notion of web platforms -- if you don't see any new jewels spinning out of safarisister.etsy.com...just know i'm deep in the work belly of mashups, CSS, html, API's (ok i'm stretching the truth on that one), and playing with Microsoft's Expression Studio and Visual Studio to understand more about this new languange. Perhaps as i learn more about these tools and technologies i can provide mini tutorial videos to mash up your blogs and etsy sites.

Jalisco Mexico & Think Pink

We (myself, husband and two dogs) are just back from a around trip road from Mexico City to the Pacific Ocean via Jalisco. Highly recommended! we heard a thump thump and discovered this tree with fushia pink poms poms that were falling from the sky and hitting the hood of a parked pick up truck.
I have no idea what kind of tree this is so if you know please post. We are extremely curious...the color is so vibrant i suspect that it would produce some interesting natural pigment for crafts. To be investigated!
Reds and pinks and fushias and rose, lots of hot hue palettes are bountiful in Jalisco -- check out my flickr pics (in right margin of this blog) from the road trip. Especially if you love ceramics. I came across the most fantastic ceramic museum in Tonalá: National Ceramic Museum. Also, my friend Carmen sent me this article from the New York Times in which you can read more about this local.
As you can tell in my jewelry on safarisister.etsy.com my palettes tend to be on the cooler side so i thought i will give myself a Safarisister Jewelry challenge this week and THINK PINK :> I am making pink jewelry this week.
